HIST AL_Bulb

On Dec. 20, 1951 this 200-watt light bulb, and three others like it, were lighted by electrical energy produced through the use of Experimental Breeder Reactor I (EBR-I). This feat marked the first known production of usable amounts of electricity created by nuclear means. This bulb was presented to Harry S. Truman, then President of the United States. The Atomic Energy Commission, which finanaced the reactor, and Argonne National Laboratory, designer and operator, have announced decommissioning of the historic « atomic furnace. » Apr. 8, 1964 (Tribune File Photo, Chicago Tribune)
