Two flightless midges, the largest land creatures in Antarctica, are seen mating in this undated handout photo. The midges grow up to about 0.5 centimetres long. The female, above, is larger than the male. Lurking among rocks on the Antarctic Peninsula, the most aggressive land predator on the frozen continent is on the prowl – for microscopic prey. The continent is best known for penguins, seals and whales, but all rely on the sea for food, unlike its Lilliputian land-based creatures and plants. To match feature ANTARCTICA-BUGS/ REUTERS/T.
